Reverse Logistics

Context :
European environmental directives are progressively making their mark on national legislation

European Union legislation is gradually taking precedence over individual member state laws: the process of adapting a number of sector-based directives into national legislation is underway : batteries and accumulators, end-of-life vehicles, electrical and electronic equipment, etc.

Focus on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
Once the new European directive 2002/96/CE on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment is adapted into individual member state legislation it will attribute new responsibilities to producers and retailers as of 13 August 2005, in terms of :

Collecting and transporting waste :
separately collected WEEE shall be carried out in a way which optimizes re-use and recycling of those components or whole appliances capable of being re-used or recycled.

Treating waste :
for example, via the removal of all dangerous products such as fluids (CFCs, oils, etc.), batteries and accumulators, capacitors containing PCBs, toner cartridges, etc.

Recovering waste :
recovery targets have been set by product category

Tracking waste :
producers shall keep records of the mass of WEEE, their components, materials or substances when entering (input) and leaving (output) the treatment facility and/or entering (input) the recovery or recycling site

 The “General Contractor” approach

The “general contractor” approach: optimising the management of your current and end-of-life products

Reverse Logistics has long been at the heart of Geodis’ strategy. The Group’s approach, which is based on managing current and end-of-life products, now focuses on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and products from the automotive maintenance and repair business, as a direct result of new European directives in these fields.

In order to meet its customers’ requirements, Geodis has established a centralised, General Contractor-style organisational structure at European level, which provides the following services:

  • sourcing, auditing, selecting and monitoring of the various service providers: collection, transport, logistics, treatment, etc.

  • coordinating operational management teams at national level,

  • ensuring all processes are in line with current legislation,

  • and guaranteeing complete traceability across the board: BSDIs, regulatory statistics, etc.

  • Geodis positions itself as a Solutions Integrator that manages the complete reverse logistics chain, using jointly its own resources and the best service providers available on the market.

An extensive range of services, from collection to final disposal, focused on our customer requirements.
A proven experience as a “General Contractor” at European level, using jointly the Group’s own resources and the best service providers available on the market.
Dedicated waste management subsidiaries (coordination, sorting, testing, dismantling, reconditioning, resale, managing recovery processes, etc.): Geodis Valenda and Geodis Euromatic-G²R in France, as well as sites in Mainz (Germany) and Busnago (Italy).
Specific solutions, such as BM Pack Services, specialising in recycling and reconditioning IBCs and drums.

     A Joint Venture with SITA

In response to evolving legislation and the increasing complexity of managing current and end-of-life products, SITA and GEODIS have decided to pool their skills and networks The two companies have created a dedicated entity , which specialises in Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and products from the automotive repair and maintenance business.

  • A joint venture designed to meet emerging needs

  • Following a period of intense debate over how to best meet the needs of companies and local authorities in terms of managing their current and end-of-life products, SITA and GEODIS decided to create an SAS (simplified joint-stock company under French law) consisting in a 50-50 joint venture, whose name has yet to be chosen.
This joint venture, which is to be managed independently, will benefit from the combined expertise of all SITA and GEODIS subsidiaries, as well as the synergies required for it to develop at European level.

  • A melding of complementary expertise

  • SITA and GEODIS plan to unite their European leadership (in waste processing and recovery and logistics, respectively) and resources from their sites in France and Europe.
They will also pool their expertise in four key areas:

    > Strategic project and operations management : audit, coordination, follow-up and traceability
    > Logistics : collection, consolidation and sorting, forwarding
    > Processing : clean up, recovery, disposal of final and hazardous waste products
    > Marketing for processed products : asset management, repair and resale of parts and finished products

  • Organising the business and its resources for complete control

  • The joint venture will develop the necessary skill areas to ensure complete control over all its business activities in terms of both technology and finance and will call on a network of local, national and European partners.
To do this, an organisational structure and tools adapted to the development of its business will be implemented.

SITA, a division of SUEZ Environnement, generated revenues of €5,5 billion in 2003 and serves 43.5 million residents all over Europe.
The company employs nearly 49,000 people who work closely with 384,000 industrial and business customers in 24 countries. SITA activities cover the entire spectrum of waste management services: collection, sorting, recovery, processing hazardous and non-hazardous waste (excluding nuclear waste) in both solid and liquid form and urban cleaning.
